Taking It To The Streets with Lori and Shira

Lori and Baby
Taking It To The Streets with Lori and Shira started out as a mother and teen daughter driving around Riverside, California giving waters, snacks and dog treats to homeless people and their pets. The more they drove around Riverside the more people and pets they would see. Lori and Shira use Facebook as a tool to get others to help, and people have been very generous making monetary and supply donations.

SAMSUNGWithin a short amount of time their vehicle had containers filled with pet food and supplies, toiletries, snacks, towels, socks, clothing and whatever else they could fit in. They approached a local storage facility and inquired about getting a unit donated as there was no way they could fit all of the supply donations in their garage. A 10×10 unit was donated in November 2012 and they still need more space!

Lori and Shira’s local travels log between 15 and 85 miles a day as they drive from area to area looking for individuals and pets that might benefit from the kindness of their supporters. They work to provide information about services to those seeking help that the organization may not be able to provide. For many, these animals are the only unconditional love and loyalty they receive and Lori and Shira are out there showing the homeless and their pets that they are not invisible.

SAMSUNGThe mother-daughter team documents their daily travels, ‘street stores’ and donations on their Facebook page. Taking It To The Streets with Lori and Shira became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in January 2013. They spay/neuter, vaccinate, microchip and license as many animals as they can get funding for. Once they reach their financial goals for each animal, they take the animals to the Lifeline Spay and Neuter Clinic. If the companions of the animals have an ID, the organization will then arrange a pet-friendly motel for the night so they can all rest in a clean and safe environment after the surgery.

The organization’s motto is “Spread A Little Kindness Today” and they work to do that every single day.

Make sure to check out the Taking It To The Streets with Lori and Shira Facebook page and website. You can also follow them on Twitter!  Drop them a note to congratulate them on receiving the 2014 Caught in the Act award from Random Acts.
