Love on a Leash (LOAL) is a national non-profit organization made up of all volunteers that provides therapy pet visitations to hospitals, schools, and other facilities.

“A therapy pet’s primary function is to brighten someone’s day. The majority of our members are involved in this social side of therapy work. Dogs and their owners visit nursing homes, hospitals and schools to provide emotional support. They put a smile on someone’s face, make their day a little brighter, or bring back a cherished memory.”

All breeds are welcome to participate in LOAL’s pet therapy program.  As an organization, the group does not discriminate and will not work with facilities that do.

Axel3LOAL volunteers take their family dogs to visit schools, day-care centers and special education classrooms, providing an educational experience, as well as a teaching tool.

Some of the teams work with special-education students, while others work with students who come from troubled pasts.

Volunteers can be found in over half of the states in the United States, and many have formed local chapters to facilitate the process.  One chapter, the North Central Indiana Chapter, led by Angela Huser, has nearly 40 therapy teams and visits hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, hospice care facilities, local libraries, schools, and more.  Most of the dogs in this program were adopted from the local humane society and many are pit bull terrier like dogs!  You can connect with this local chapter on Facebook and on their website.

the community and touch people’s lives in so many ways, while at the same time highlighting how amazing shelter dogs are.

People and dogs helping each other, that’s what it’s all about.  Don’t miss this local PBS video on LOAL, featuring two special pit bull terrier like dogs, Axel and Kayla.
