Other Dogs

StubbyDog fans love pit bulls, but what about the other discriminated dogs?

By Kirstyn Northrop Cobb

By now, our wonderful StubbyDog fans all love pit bull type dogs. We speak highly of them and are all advocates. Through our interactions with pit bull type dogs, we have learned that pit bulls are dogs and all dogs are individuals. But, with our focus on pit bulls, have we lost sight of the general message?

In my work in advocacy, I have witnessed people saying how awesome pit bulls are all the time. I hear the “all dogs are individuals and you should judge a dog based on personality, not on appearance”. But, then, every so often, I hear something else from the same people that makes me think that for as many steps forward as we have taken, it’s still not enough. I live next to a county where there is a ban on pit bulls. So, the people are going with other dogs, usually bigger dogs. Because of that, we are seeing an increase in Cane Corsos, Presa Canarios, Boerboels and Dogo Argentinos (also known as Argentine Mastiffs). Ultimately, this leads to an increase of these dogs in our shelters. I have heard advocates, the SAME advocates who say that pit bulls are awesome and should all be judged as individuals, express concerns about the Corsos, Presas, Boerboels and Dogos based on size and appearance, and not on the dog’s actual personality. It’s not just the large dogs, either. Chihuahuas are facing discrimination as well.

We know that every dog has its day, and it may not always a good day. Many dogs have been discriminated against. These include Bloodhounds, Newfoundlands, Collies, Huskies, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, and now pit bulls. And what have we learned? That all dogs are individuals and should be judged as such.

Caitlyn Reynolds started Response-A-Bull Rescue in Delaware to help pit bulls. As time passed, Caitlyn came to realize that there were so many other dogs out there who are also being discriminated against. In time, Caitlyn expanded her rescue to include other dogs such as Cane Corsos, Presa Canarios, and Rottweilers. Caitlyn is a dog lover and loves all dogs, not just the dog that she is currently fighting for.

Today, I am writing in hopes that discrimination based on appearance stops. I would like all dogs to be judged by their personality. I would like all dogs to be judged as individuals. I would like to see past large or small, Mastiff or Chihuahua, pit bull or shepherd mix, black or brindle, cropped ears or floppy ears, and see them all as dogs and companions.
