Pretties with Pitties adds a program to help adoptable pit bulls gain their Canine Good Citizen certification

If you live in the San Diego area, you have probably seen them out and about in their trademark pink shirts, complete with smiling pit bulls wearing vests! Pretties with Pitties started out by walking adoptable pit bulls in San Diego to give them added exposure, exercise and to help educate the public (see “Taking it to the Streets”). The adoptable dogs come from several San Diego-based pit bull rescue groups. While the walks will continue the group has also added a new program to take things a step further.

Pretties with Pitties has teamed up with Zaira Perez, lead trainer and Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certifier at Leap Dog Training in San Diego to help get more adoptable pit bulls trained and CGC certified. Kerri Ewing, co-founder of Pretties with Pitties, feels that “the more rescued pit bulls that have their CGC certification, the better it will be for overall perception.”

CGC certification consists of a multi-part test designed by the American Kennel Club to promote responsible dog ownership and encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. The program that Pretties with Pitties is conducting will include a six-week course, a graduation and the CGC test. The test includes a series of objectives, such as loose leash walking, accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for grooming and petting, walking through a crowd, sitting or laying down and staying in place, coming when called, reacting appropriately to another dog, reacting appropriately to distractions and staying calm when separated from owner. Once the dog has passed the test, he or she can carry around her certification as a badge of honor!

But what about the dogs that are adopted before they have completed the course? No problem! New owners can continue the classes with the dogs. What about the dogs who have already been adopted? Yep, the classes are open to them as well!

“Pretties with Pitties always strives to do as much as possible for the betterment of the breed and to help find amazing homes for adoptable dogs,” Kerri says. “It is great to see the support behind the program and the interest. When we can tell people that dogs are CGC certified, people tend to see them in a different light. The more CGC certified pit bulls out there, the better!”
