Gus Goes for Greatness

When this pit bull isn’t busy earning AKC titles, he’s working as a certified therapy dog

By Joann Sesser

Gus was barely 5 weeks old when we rescued him. I had no intentions of getting another dog, as we already have three, but something just drew me to him. Thank God it did. Having just lost my mother, Gus was the best therapy for me.

I threw myself into his obedience training and what a payoff that was. Gus has received his Canine Good Citizen certification, American Kennel Club (AKC) Rally Novice title, AKC Beginner Obedience title, has been temperament tested by the American Temperament Society and has become a therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. We are currently working on getting his AKC Novice title, which would give him his AKC Companion Dog title! We’ve done a lot in a little over two and a half years! Gus has changed many people’s opinions about pit bulls. He’s so loving, happy, gentle and outgoing. He doesn’t know a stranger!

He lives happily with our cat, Bull Mastiff, Chihuahua and Toy Fox Terrier. So far, Gus has never shown any dog aggression. He thinks other dogs are just new friends for him to meet and play with. Gus is my best friend and my companion, and I look forward to many, many years of good times with him.
