Puppies can now get a jump start into good training and manners through the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program.

The American Kennel Club launched the program to encourage dog owners to take their new puppies to a basic training class and continue training afterwards for the AKC Canine Good Citizen award. S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and Responsibility – all things puppies need their owners to provide.

S.T.A.R. puppy classes are for dogs 1 year and younger, and they must be taught by an AKC approved Canine Good Citizen test evaluator.

The classes provide valuable information to owners on common puppy-raising issues, including housetraining, chewing and crate training. Puppies receive crucial socialization and start learning basic skills like coming when called and walking on a leash.

Classes typically occur once a week for at least six weeks.

At the end of the course, the instructor administers the AKC S.T.A.R. puppy test. Components include allowing petting by a person other than the owner, performing a sit and down with use of a food lure, and coming to the owner from a distance of 5 feet.

Upon passing, you receive an application to send to the AKC for enrollment in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. All dogs are welcome to participate in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, including purebreds and mixed breeds.

Your puppy will receive:

• AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Medal (for display or memento purposes; not suitable as a collar tag).

• A beautiful, frameable certificate designating your puppy is in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records.

• AKC Puppy Handbook.

• Discount to enroll in AKC Companion Animal Recovery Corporation, a 24-hour recovery service.

• Ongoing monthly e-mail newsletter: “Your AKC.” This includes training tips and up-to-date information every dog owner needs to know.
