I am able to foster because I know that it gave each of those dogs that I loved so well the chance to find the exact life that I dreamed of for them, and I’ll continue because every dog should have that life. It doesn’t have to be with me.

Ruffles was picked up as a stray in a rural part of Virginia. With no collar and despite her terrible condition, she maintained her sweet nature. Years of neglect and recurring ear infections left untreated caused severe scarring in her ears and left her deaf.

I had only been volunteering with the New York City rescue group Mighty Mutts for two months when I decided I wanted to become a foster parent. I had moved to New York from Kansas to be with my fiancé and was feeling severely dog deprived. I brought the subject up with my fiancé, who seemed OK with getting a dog, “as long as it’s not a pit bull.”
