I thought it would be a good idea to get Walter certified as a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International for two reasons: 1) He thrives on attention, so I knew it would be good for him to be in situations where he would get just that; 2) Probably most important, I feel that Walter can be an ambassador for his breed and, in the long run, help save lives.

Carla Lou was rescued at the age of 1 year old where she went to live with Deirdre “Little Darling” Franklin. Together, they founded Pinups for Pitbulls and set about changing minds and misconceptions.

When animal control came for my dog Katrina, I seriously considered running. I thought about hiding her and denying that I even knew who she was. Instead, in response to the banging on the door, I invited the officers in to meet her and to hear her story.

When I started going through the listings of available dogs, one thing stood out: There were more Staffordshire Terriers and pit bulls than any other breeds in the sanctuary, considerably more. I had never even heard of a Staffordshire Terrier and found out they were basically the same as an American Pit Bull Terrier, which explained a lot.

It was up to me to take responsibility. So I did. I jumped right on the bandwagon of changing perceptions about pit bulls. Including mine. I have never been sorry. I feel sorry for people who are subjected to me now, as I attempt to proselytize them about the awesomeness of pit bull type dogs.

Slaw is also the inspiration for the campaign to get United Airlines to remove the breed discrimination from their pet policy. In November 2011, I was making plans to move from Hawaii and learned of a policy that prevented pit bull-type dogs and several breeds from flying on Continental Airlines.
