The Amazing Ali

Hi, my name is Ali, and I am almost 11 years young. I think my birthday is in October, but I still feel like I’m 2. My family is the best bunch of people in the entire world to me. They play with me, walk me and take care of the things I cannot. But more importantly, let me tell you my story of how I got to be here.

Kindred Spirits: Sanctuary, Hospice for Senior Animals

Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary occupies a quiet four acres off a semi-main artery outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. The day I visit is typical high desert: bright sun, clear skies. Pedersen, who I’d never met in person before, greets me with a hug.

Walter the Elderbull

I thought it would be a good idea to get Walter certified as a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International for two reasons: 1) He thrives on attention, so I knew it would be good for him to be in situations where he would get just that; 2) Probably most important, I feel that Walter can be an ambassador for his breed and, in the long run, help save lives.

Bailey’s Way

Bailey from the beachthb

We have had Bailey since she was 10 weeks old. She has seen a lot of life in these last 11+ years. She has seen rescue dogs come and go. Months passed and he grew on me. It’s like he just knew me and what I needed, and when and where to cuddle. He knew how to make a happy, sighing noise as if to say, “Thank you lady.” The thing of it was, selfishly, I wanted to keep him. I was going through some bumps in the road of my life and Quinn seemed to ground me.

Saving Stella

Stella had two strikes against her that made the chance of a quick adoption unlikely – one being a pit bull and two being an older dog. Christmas came and went, then New Year’s, and Stella was still waiting for a new home. During her stay, however, staff and volunteers came to realize that Stella was very talented.

Our Ancient Bull

We are proud parents of an “ancient bull.” This girl we affectionately call “Sunny Hunny Bunny Wiggle Butt” came to us as a medical foster. She had been bred repeatedly and was full of scars and tears, and came to our shelter with a huge gaping neck wound from a pinch collar.

I Miss You

Growing up with animals, I have had to say goodbye before, and in the past the decision on whether it’s time is often the hardest part – the idea of playing God and making that call is an impossible one. But in the case of Omega, her downward spiral was so fast and severe, I wanted to put her out of her misery as soon as possible. The decision was clear.
