Wilbur: Neutered & Proud!

We don’t know a ton about Wilbur since he was adopted through Austin Pets Alive back in January of 2013. Prior to that, he was found in the early summer of 2012 on the streets as a stray, the victim of some painfully obvious abuse and/or neglect – heavily scarred, heartworm-positive, missing many of his front teeth and reluctant to look anyone in the eye. Wilbur had spent so much time at the shelter overlooked by potential adopters that his adoption fee was dropped to $0 as a desperate attempt to get a senior dog into a loving home. He stole our hearts immediately. Without hesitation, we brought him home so that he might live out his golden years in quiet comfort.

We were told that because of his seemingly rough past that he would likely just retain his shy disposition and live the life of a couch potato, but the transformation over the last year and a half has been incredible. He smiles. He romps. He plays and gives us more sassy attitude than any other animal I’ve encountered. He won’t sleep unless he’s snuggled up in the bed and snores his nights away in bliss. He’s charmed our neighbors and friends with his disposition and unconditional love. It never ceases to amaze us just how much a soul can change when you give them the time, space and care that they need to thrive.

As a testament to the spirit he possesses, Wilbur passed his Canine Good Citizen test a few weeks back and I couldn’t be prouder. As a “father,” I was nearly brought to absolute tears when I thought about how someone threw this dog and his future away simply because they thought he wasn’t worth it, only to see how much he’s accomplished in just a short period of time. There will never be a day that passes where I won’t reflect on how lucky we are to have found each other.

Wilbur is not a fan of extreme weather, whether it be rain, cold or heat. As such, when the Texas summers reach their boiling point, we find ourselves at the local snow cone stand a few times a month, Wilbur in tow. It wouldn’t be fair to him if we didn’t share, but he’s a husky boy so he only gets the sugar-free, plain ice variety. Few things delight him more than food and time with us, so this just combines it all into one summer treat.

Keep up with Wilbur’s adventures on his dad’s blog here.

Wilbur_Snow_Edit Here’s Wilbur at the window of Casey’s New Orleans Snowballs. He says: “My parents treat me to a mountain of ice after a brisk afternoon walk in the Texas heat. (I let them get one, too.) Can you tell how excited (and spoiled!) I am? I’m a neighborhood celebrity and a hit with the kids at the stand!”
