Meet Jambo: Trick Dog Champion and Much More!

February 12, 2014

By Louise Stapleton-Frappell

Jambo is the first Staffordshire Bull Terrier to be a Trick Dog Champion. He’s trained with only Positive Reinforcement and is helping break the Bully Breed stereotype!

Jambo is always hard at work – either working on his tricks, promoting positive reinforcement training, or helping fight breed discriminatory laws.

Jambo 2Jambo was born in May 2012. His pedigree name is Warrior For Life. I wanted to name him after our first Staffy, Samson, who we called Sam for short. My thought process was the following: Sam?… Jam! Warrior?….Swahili! Jambo is the Swahili word for “Hello!”

His character – he’s mischievous, inquisitive, loving, extremely “licky,” and a bit of a comedian. He absolutely loves to say hello to everybody!

Jambo is full of mischief – his favorite tricks are ripping anything up that is made out of paper, cardboard, foam, etc and stealing anything that isn’t nailed down. I needed to do something to channel his boundless energy and I found that doing tricks was the answer!

Our journey began when we attended a Trick Dog Seminar given by the world famous Nando Brown when Jambo was just a few months old. Doing tricks together has enabled us to learn new behaviors, increase desired behaviors, and decrease unwanted ones. It has also helped us to bond more deeply, and, most importantly, to have fun together.

Jambo and Tessa 1Doing Dog Tricks promotes accelerated learning through the use of Applied Operant Conditioning (Positive Reinforcement Training). All his tricks are taught through luring, capturing, or shaping and he’s rewarded with treats, toys, praise and play (his biggest reward ever being his boomer/staffy ball!). There’s never any force, manipulation, intimidation, or compulsion.

Jambo is a Trick Dog Uber Dude, Trick Dog Ninja, and Trick Dog Guru. You can even see Jambo performing a few of his tricks on the Ninja and Guru In The DogHouse DTC demo videos, and he had the honor of being “Dog Of The Year” 2013 with In The DogHouse DTC.

Jambo has the following titles through Do More With Your Dog: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert and finally CHAMPION! Click here to watch his “Expert” video and here for his “Champion” video!

Jambo muzzleJambo is trying his best to be a good ambassador for the “Bully” breeds and show just how ridiculous Breed Discriminatory Legislation is!

Because of a breed discriminatory policy where we live, I need a “Potentially Dangerous Dog” handler’s license in order to have him in our family. Jambo also had to be registered as a “Potentially Dangerous Dog” and he has to be muzzled when we are out in public.  It’s hard to give kisses through a muzzle!

We’re hoping to show the world how silly these discriminatory laws are and someday, Jambo will be able to do his favorite thing: say hello with lots of licks, and without a muzzle.  Keep up with Jambo on Facebook!
