Tasty Beef Twists

The beauty of these (and all homemade) treats is that you have much greater control over the quality of ingredients that go into them.

  • 3 ½ c all-purpose flour
  • 1 c cornmeal
  • ¾ c beef stock (if you don’t have beef stock, use a beef bouillon cube)
  • ¼ c milk
  • ¼ c vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 jar beef baby food, strained
  • 1 packet unflavored gelatin

  • Preheat oven to 400 F.
  • Bring beef stock (or water with dissolved bouillon cube) to a boil; add gelatin.
  • Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl.
  • Add milk, oil, egg, baby food, and stock/bouillon to dry ingredients.
  • Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  • On a floured surface, roll dough out to ¼ inch thickness.
  • Cut dough into ½ x 6 inch strips.
  • Twist each strip 3 times before placing on lightly greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake 35-40 minutes, until the sticks are very firm to the touch.
  • Let cool completely on a rack before storing in the refrigerator or freezer.

Note: Make sure that you follow the instructions on the gelatin package, and stir until the crystals are completely dissolved. If you are using a bouillon cube or store-bought beef stock, try to get low-sodium if possible.
