Harper – Adopted!

January 3, 2013

Rescue Dog of the Week

The film Harper is a private investigator played by Paul Newman. The canine Harper is also ruggedly handsome and charismatic, as well as a good citizen and all around nice guy. We say he is also a PI – “Pup Idol.”

Harper was a stray who ended up at the shelter in Levy County, Florida. We learned about him from volunteers at the shelter, who described him as calm, friendly, and even-tempered. He tested positive for heartworm disease, so we knew he would have several months of treatment before he could be adoptable. Based on the volunteers’ description and his picture, we took a chance and pulled him in early November. He was neutered and, after several weeks of pre-treatment, had his first heartworm treatment in early December. He will finish his treatment in early January and should be ready to go to a new home a few weeks after that.

Harper is a wonderful companion in all kinds of activities. He loves walks and is very well-behaved on a leash, but he enjoys lounging around the house as well. He is a “leaner” who cannot get enough of physical contact (he also loves to fall asleep with his big head in the lap of a special person). While he loves attention and is very outgoing, Harper is never pushy. He is mellow and happy everywhere we have taken him, from the sofa at home to a hike in the woods to a busy farmers’ market.

By accident, we discovered the place he seems to like best. When one of our reading dogs was injured just before the library’s annual holiday craft fair, we decided to take Harper in her place. He was an absolute star. The children all adored him and he was unfailingly gentle and polite with everyone he met, including toddlers and kids who were afraid of dogs. The adults, including parents and librarians, were amazed to learn that this was his first event of this type. He is a born therapy dog – he is friendly, confident, outgoing, and gentle, and he loves meeting new people. At the library he made everyone feel special, giving his attention to each new person in turn and never losing his enthusiasm or calm demeanor. We would love to find him an adopter who can help him realize his potential as a therapy dog.

Harper is about three years old and weighs about 55 lbs. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and healthy other than the ongoing heartworm treatment and a slight, occasional limp on his right hind leg due to an old injury. Harper does well with children, adults, and other dogs but would be best in a home without cats. He currently lives in a foster home and is available for adoption from Plenty of Pit Bulls in Gainesville, Florida.
