A young pit bull becomes a service dog to her owner, who suffers from PTSD

By Carol Black

I am so excited that I was asked to share my story about my pit bull, who is a service dog for my husband. My husband, who was in the Army, is a 10-Point Veteran. Seven years ago he was finally diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mood disorder. He was put on all kinds of drugs, but he kept having severe panic attacks. He was always depressed and could not be around even small crowds or people.

About a year and a half ago, we took in a pit bull puppy. When I saw her as a tiny puppy, the first thing I asked was, “Is that a girl?” They said yes, and then I said, “What a little sweet pea! I want her!” From then on we called her Sweetpea.

We saw Sweetpea many times, and when she was old enough, we brought our 5-year-old Chihuahua, Squirt, to meet his new sister. We took them to the park where they became best buddies! I started training her myself because we live in a small town with no training services for dogs. Sweetpea started to be a big help to my husband the first day we brought her home. I called my husband’s Veteran Affairs psychologist and told him I wanted to make Sweetpea a service dog for him. The doctor agreed and sent me a letter stating that she was now a service dog.

I am still training Sweetpea. She is one and a half years old now. Because of her my husband is able to get out of the house. We go hiking, fishing, and he goes into the stores and to my church events. He is not as depressed now and sleeps better at night. When he has a panic attack, Sweetpea stays by his side, licks him, cuddles with him and does whatever it takes to help him out of the panic attack. When he is depressed, she turns into a clown and does silly stuff to make him laugh. I thank God every day for bringing Sweetpea to us. I am now an advocate for pit bulls on Facebook, and I also try to educate people and let them be around Sweetpea to see what loving, kind, gentle, funny, sweet and smart dogs they are.

Thank you for letting me share our story!
