Shelby

October 25, 2012

StubbyDog’s Rescue Dog of the Week is sponsored by Zobo Pet Products, who will be giving away a free collar for every dog adopted through this program.

Shelby is a 1-year-old, spayed pit bull mix. Shelby was found stray as a baby in rural Oklahoma. When she came into the shelter, she was so weak that she couldn’t even stand up to eat. She had mange so badly that she was more pink than white. She looked so frightened and sad. She was in a very small rural shelter in Durant, OK that has very little traffic. There is a single shelter angel that volunteers there though and works tirelessly to get pictures of all the animals that come in and get them placed before their time is up. Her name is Gina and she scooped Shelby right up and took her to the vet. The vet put her on some medicine for her mange; Gina made sure she got lots of food, water and rest and started looking for a place for her to go.

She is our own local celebrity after Deaf Dogs Rock did an feature article on her! Check it out here.

We quickly met with Gina and picked Shelby up and got her to a foster home that was able to devote enough time to her care to start nursing her back to health. Soon after we realized that Shelby is deaf. It was surely a hindrance for her out on her own before she was found. Looking at her today, you would never guess that her beginnings were so wrought with scarcity and fear. She has the most beautiful pittie smile and some energy that just won’t quit!! She absolutely LOVES EVERYONE and is thrilled to greet you with that beautiful smile and bouncing energy!!! She is super sweet and playful and never meets a stranger. She’s about 1 year old now and as I said, she is deaf, but that doesn’t slow her down! She has the most beautiful crystal blue eyes to go with her sunny personality. What a great playmate she will make for any family and any other dogs!

These amazing pictures were done by DreamEyce Studio and she has this to say about Shelby!
“In case anyone was wondering, It’s especially hard to photograph a deaf dog, who has no food motivation. But I nailed it, and I adore her. A very, very special gal. She’s deaf, young adult, spayed, and wonderful. She’s like a freight train, in the good way, and someone wanting a challenge to train will appreciate this stunning gal. As soon as she figured out what it was I was after she gave me her all. No interest in food, and she couldn’t hear praise, but she worked her crystal blue eyes and adorable pit bull grin for my smile, and some pats. She is a very special girl, and needs her very special forever home!

Shelby is available through PJ’s Place Rescue in Azle, Texas. She has her own trainer that is working with her to teach her hand signals and basic obedience for starters. She will need an owner that is patient enough to learn along with her and help her understand this world that she is so eager to explore. She is VERY quick to want to please her people, she just needs to understand what they want. If you are interested in showing this sweet girl how wonderful people really can be, please email PJ’s Place [email protected]. You can visit them on Facebook.

Deaf dogs rock! I adopted my girl, Yada, from San Francisco ACC almost 3 years ago. Yada was at least 18 months old when Rocket Dog Rescue pulled her for me to adopt from the County shelter. She is a delight, a love bug and no one ever can tell that she is any different than the rest of the pack (5 total). Yada picks up on cues from the “hearing” dogs in our family and she is quick to study human body language, facial expressions and eager to please. She has blossomed as a permanent member of our family; familiar with the backyard she will even go outdoors at night without an escort to potty. 🙂
