I’m a Good Dog – Blog One

The author of a new book about pit bulls shares his first post for StubbyDog

By Ken Foster

Many of you have been following the adventures of my friend Butley as he tours the country. Butley is just one of the dogs you will also meet in my new book, I’m a Good Dog: Pit Bulls, America’s Most Beautiful (and Misunderstood) Pet.” An illustrated history and celebration of the breed, the new book is being published by Viking Studio (Oct. 25, 2012). This is a book that I’ve wanted to do for over five years, but no publisher would touch it. After I finally gave up, I received an offer out of the blue to work on a proposal that was being put together by a book packager to sell to a major publisher. And we landed at Penguin, the pit bull friendliest publisher around; they also published Jim Gorant’s books “ The Lost Dogs” and “Wallace.”

As I write this, we’re just four days away from publication – and I’m busy packing and spending extra time with my own dogs as I prepare to hit the road. I’ll be posting blog updates from the tour at Stubby Dog and, of course, I hope to run into everyone in person along the way. Meanwhile, in this post, I unveil the book trailer and share some specifics on the West Coast leg of the tour.

I’ve also been lucky to get some early coverage of the book, including in The Atlantic Magazine’s “Cities” site, Bark Magazine, Writers Digest and Animal Farm Foundation’s blog. AFF was incredibly generous while I was researching the book, and they are bringing me to the No More Homeless Pets Conference in Las Vegas to launch the book on Oct. 25.

Suddenly it feels like there is a lot of momentum behind all this hard work, so I can’t wait to get moving. Here are my tour dates; hope to see you on the road:

Welcome to the road, Ken! Maybe we’ll get to see you when you’re in Baltimore (& we’re in DC)? Butley says he’s got a beer with your name on it (provided you have a biscuit with his!)… 🙂
