Coco Puffin

January 5, 2012

StubbyDog’s Rescue Dog of the Week is sponsored by Zobo Pet Products, who will be giving away a free collar for every dog adopted through this program.

In the beginning of 2010, Coco Puffin was found as a stray, limping in a cold spell during Austin’s winter. Not only was she limping, but she emaciated, covered in fleas, and extremely weak due to injuries that we think may have come from getting hit by a car. It was clear that she had also recently delivered a litter, but her babies were nowhere to be found.

A Good Samaritan found her and brought her to Love-A-Bull. Love-A-Bull took her to Animal Trustees of Austin, where they determined she would need corrective surgery to address her physical injuries. She underwent hip surgery and recovered successfully, all while gaining strength through nutritious meals, proper medication, and a warm bed in a loving foster home.

However, she sustained some semi-permanent nerve damage, which causes her to drag her foot when she walks. Coco took a road trip to a canine neuro-specialist in Dallas, who determined that the limb would not require amputation, and indeed, her foot might regain some function with physical therapy. Coco then hit the gym for several weeks of therapy (underwater treadmill, ball and balancing, and bracing), through which she gained muscle and became more comfortable trying to place her foot correctly.

She will most likely always need a brace for walks, but this condition does not slow her down a bit! She loves to play in the yard, explore new places, and get adoring looks from all who meet her. Her personality is generally calm, but her ever-wagging tail gets a life of its own around new people. She loves all people and has a special fondness for snuggling. She prefers to be the only dog or share her home with small dogs, but is a little too fond of cats.

She would make a great companion as she wants nothing more than to lay next to you and sigh contentedly. An ardent lover of being petted and loved, she will offer up her belly for rubs until the cows come home! Please check out (and share) her pics and video, or friend her on Facebook.

Love-A-Bull is located in Austin, Texas. You can visit their website to find more information about Coco and other adoptable dogs. For more information and to fill out an adoption application for Coco, visit her profile on Petfinder. Coco’s ChipIn, is here.
