Back to School!

October 3, 2011

Stubby lived his life on a chain until one day he broke free and ran away. A Good Samaritan found him and brought him to the shelter. Now his real story begins…

I had to go to SCHOOL today!

Okay, I’m getting ahead of myself. (That’s what they said at school, too!)

Marnie’s landlord, Mr. Modesto, said that I had to go to school if I wanted to come with them. I wasn’t so sure what school was, but if it meant going home with the family, I was all for it!

I’ve been living with Marnie, Matt and Lily for a few weeks when they signed me up for classes. Except now I knew what school meant. School is what Lily and Matt HATE! And now I had to go!

Marnie loaded me in the car with Matt and Lily and reminded all of us to “listen to the woman in charge.” I thought Marnie was the woman in charge! Now I was going to have new people? Being a family dog can sure get confusing….and school was making me nervous!

The first thing I saw were a whole bunch of dogs! They were super-excited and dumping and barking. I haven’t seen so many dogs since I was at the shelter. And the bad place. I think there were other dogs there, but I can’t really remember that much.

I started to get nervous. I didn’t know any of these dogs. And they didn’t know me. I started to twist on my leash, trying to get away!

“Stubby, what’s wrong?” Matt asked. “Mom, Stubby’s acting weird!”

Marnie took the leash and told me to sit. She held up a treat and I didn’t really want to sit I wanted to get back in the car and away from all of these crazy dogs! But…I really wanted the treat!

I sat down and Marnie gave me a piece of bacon. BACON?

“Good job,” said a woman, “getting him to calm down with all of the chaos with a high-value treat.”

“His name is Stubby!” Matt said proudly.

“My name is Andrea, and I’m your instructor,” she replied. She kneeled down next to me and scratched my ears. “Welcome to class, Stubby. You’ll do great.”

I was going to do great…especially since there was bacon involved!
