Today I Have a Family

June 13, 2011

Stubby lived his life on a chain until one day he broke free and ran away. A Good Samaritan found him and brought him to the shelter. Now his real story begins…

“He has to say yes, he has to!” Lily cried.

“Mom, what if he says no?” Matt asked. He looked at me nervously. Laura and Carl looked at each other.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Marnie warned them. “Matt, Lily, lean in next to Stubby.” Marnie took a picture of the three of us. She dialed the phone.

“Yes, that’s the photo I just sent. I know he’s a pit bull…but…” Marnie looked back at me. “He’s very good. I wasn’t planning on it either. But, well, you just have to meet him.”

Marnie turned back to us. “Mr. Baxter said yes. BUT…we have to go to obedience class. AND he wants to meet Stubby. So we all have to be on our best behavior.”

Once upon a time I was a dog who came from a dark and scary place, a place that was cold, where there was nothing soft to sleep on, where I didn’t have enough food or water, where I didn’t have a person who loved me.

Today I have a family.
