Pit Bull Paradise

A vacation fit for a King

By Ginger Monteleone

The name of the island is East Sister Rock Island, but we call it “The Island.” It is a luxury private island rental in the Florida Keys. I have been lucky enough to stay there three times now. The last time we brought King, our American pit bull terrier. At the time he was about 10 months old.

The absolute freedom is priceless. Being a responsible dog owner, our dog is never off leash. We also don’t frequent dog parks too often. So, what an amazing feeling it was to let our dog run free with absolutely no worries. Well, there was an occasional flash of a rouge shark getting too close, but maybe that was just my wild imagination getting the best of me.

The island is a quarter mile off shore from MM 50 in the Florida Keys. The home sits on just more than an acre. It has three bedrooms and a full veranda around the entire house. There are 19 sliding glass doors around the house as well. The ocean breeze cuts through the house from one end to the other. All of the doors were left open, yet King was in no rush to run off. He had already explored the island and was content lying in the open doorway watching the waves crash on the rocks.

Who knew pit bulls like to fish too? He was very excited watching the boys reel in their catch. Especially when it was a nurse shark! I thought he was going to jump off the dock!

We will be back one day. But, then it will be with King and Tink, our other dog. Coming from a city affected by BSL, this island is heaven on Earth.

    What a wonderful getaway!

(I initially misread the last line as “infected” rather than “affected”, and I think the former is pretty accurate! 🙂

  2. StubbyDog says:

@skreidle I know, doesn’t everyone just want to go there with their dog now!

Love this post and King is so handsome gotta love him too. I really admire responsible owners who do all that is necessary to give their bully a great life and great experiences. I moved my girl out of that same county because of BSL. We have been in Palm Beach County now for 3 years and loving it.

@StubbyDog Absolutely! I mean, my couple fenced acres in the wood are nice and all, but a private island? Bliss! 😀

Couple fenced acres sounds just shy of bliss to me!! We have have a 1/10 fenced acre. lol! 🙂

Yeah, that sounds like our last house — 0.23ac total, back yard fenced. Had to move about 50 miles further away from DC to get a lot more land for half the price! 🙂
