It Wasn’t a Dream After All

June 27, 2011

Stubby lived his life on a chain until one day he broke free and ran away. A Good Samaritan found him and brought him to the shelter. Now his real story begins…

I had a dream that I had a safe spot to curl up in the sun and people who loved me. Then I woke up and Carl was there. “Are you ready to go home, Stubby?”

HOME! It wasn’t a dream after all!

Carl slipped a lead around my neck and helped me out of my cage. I was still a little sore, but I was too excited to see my family!

Marnie, Lily and Matt were waiting for me in front of the clinic. Marnie held a brand new red collar and matching leash. There was something shiny and silver hanging from the collar.

Lily grabbed the collar from her mom and showed me the shiny silver tags. “That says ‘Stubby’ and it has your phone number so if it’s ever lost people know that you belong to us.”

Matt snapped the collar around my neck. “What do you think, Stubby?”

The collar fit perfect! Not too tight, but not too loose. This collar was different than the one that the shelter gave me. It didn’t smell like scared dogs. It smelled new. It smelled like I was the only dog who had ever worn this collar.

They picked out this collar for me.

Marnie snapped the matching leash and scratched me between the eyes. “You look like a regular member of the family now.” She turned and showed the tags to Carl. “Did we do this right?”

Carl inspected the tags. “Name…address…two phone numbers…that’s perfect.” Carl turned to the kids. “It’s important that he always wears his collar, because if he ever gets loose or lost, you want people to know that he has a family out there looking for him.”

“We don’t want him ever to be lost again,” Marnie said.

“Now that he found you guys, he won’t.” Carl crouched down and rubbed my head. “Take care of your new family, Stubby. They’re going to take care
