A Landlord is the Only Thing That Stands between Me and a Home

June 6, 2011

Stubby lived his life on a chain until one day he broke free and ran away. A Good Samaritan found him and brought him to the shelter. Now his real story begins…

Today I walked around the shelter, not once, not twice, but three times! Then I sat under the tree with the girl, and Carl the shelter worker, and Marnie, Matt and Lily. The girl – her name is Laura! – told them that she found me on the street. I was eating garbage. Lily hugged me harder and Marnie told her to “be careful” but I just licked Lily’s face.

I can’t tell them that a long time ago, at the place where I came from, I remembered hearing something that sounded like magic. I wanted to be in the middle of that sound, because it felt safe and happy. I couldn’t see it because my chain tethered me to the “house” that was really just a couple of planks of wood held up my cement blocks. I could only walk a few steps because the collar dug into my neck.

Today I sat in the center of that sound, a sound that I now know is the sound of children’s laughter. Matt and Lily hugged me and the girl and Carl started to cry and Marnie shook her head and said “we weren’t looking for you, but you found us.” She scratched me between my eyes just how I like it and smiled at me.

“You might want to call your landlord first,” Carl warned Marnie. “Sometimes they can be a little…strict when it comes to pit bulls”

Marnie looked nervous. I don’t know what a landlord is, but it sounds extra-scary. Because it’s the only thing that stands between me and a home!
