One Pit Bull Changes Everything

Daisy inspires her family to start a pit bull rescue group

By Monica Mankinen

I heard it only takes one pit bull to change everything, and now I know it’s true. After years of volunteering and working with pit bulls and bully breeds, I met Daisy Davis. She was rescued off the streets when she was less than 1 year old, and she had already given birth to 15 puppies.

Daisy was too young to be a mother and had suffered considerable abuse and neglect. She was taken off of the streets and put into a foster home. I vowed to never let anything happen to her again.

I kept my promise, and for the next few months I made a commitment to protect her, pay for any medical bills, walk and see her every single day. During that time, my husband and I fell head over heels for the most amazing dog, and we brought her home, forever.

When her old owner tried to get her back, I personally hired an attorney and made sure that did not happen. After living with Daisy, I became passionate about helping the breed. I could not imagine my life without her and wanted to give people the chance to know the love of a pit bull.

Daisy has helped change a lot of minds about the breed, from strangers to people we know. We were so inspired by our Daisy that we started a small pit bull rescue in California called, of course, Daisy Davis Pit Bull Rescue. We now have a small core group of fantastic volunteers and have been able to start programs in our community to help the breed.
Daisy Davis Pit Bull Rescue has:

Foster and Adopt Program – All of our dogs that come into our program are evaluated, live in a home and receive training. Before they are adopted, we do home checks.

Rosemary’s Touch Therapy – We work with Rosemary from North Star Services on a petting and touch therapy program as part of their rehabilitation.

Good Dog Great – We donate books and DVDs to our library on training dogs and educational books on the pit bull breed. The books and DVDs circulate through Mendocino County and are available for people to check out for free at the libraries.

Daisy Davis Outreach Program – This program helps people in the community keep their dogs. We work with helping people find housing, training, spay and neuter services, and we try to help them keep their dogs safe in any other way we can.

Daisy Davis started by the inspiration of one dog, and even though we are a very small and new group, we are proud of the work we are doing and look forward to helping change the image of America’s most misunderstood breed: the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Daisy Davis also has a brother, Shiloh Jenks. Shiloh came through the Daisy Davis foster program, and he just fit in perfectly with us, so we decided to adopt Shiloh! Shiloh was one day away from being euthanized when I got a call to save him from a shelter. He would not walk or eat at the shelter, and when we got him he had to be put on IVs. Shiloh and Daisy are best friends! Shiloh has put on almost 40 pounds. He is such a happy boy, and we credit Rosemary’s Touch Therapy for helping Shiloh come out of his shell. He is so loving and funny and makes us laugh daily!

We are truly grateful that Daisy and Shiloh came into our lives. They have inspired us in ways we could never have imagined.
