One More Day …
April 25, 2011
Stubby lived his life on a chain until one day he broke free and ran away. A Good Samaritan found him and brought him to the shelter. Now his real story begins…
I know it’s night because it’s dark and I can hear the other dogs chasing rabbits in their dreams. At least, that’s what I like to imagine. In my dreams I chase rabbits and squirrels. In my dreams, I live with the girl and she scratches my head every morning and tells me I’m a good dog.
The place – the bad place – seems like a lifetime ago. Now I’m here at the shelter and I am fed and warm and the girl comes to visit me but I know something is wrong.
Libby – the fluffy white dog who got adopted yesterday – said that dogs can’t live at the shelter forever. I keep seeing the shelter staff take dogs out of their cages. It’s not like when they come to take dogs for walks or show them to a family. They look sad and the dogs are scared and the staff speaks to them in a low, comforting voice but even though they say everything’s going to be okay you can tell that everything is not going to be okay.
They lead the dogs through a door in back. I never see those dogs again.
I cannot sleep. I think about the girl and the shelter worker saying one more day.
Something very bad is going to happen tomorrow.
I do not want to go through those doors.

My dog is my own personal Royal Princess… you can have yours too… Prince or Princess, the gratitude and loyalty abound!
Thanks everyone for commenting. You will have to stay tuned….. and remember there are so many Stubbys in shelter every where.
