Loyal to the End, But Now a New Beginning

Samantha protects the ones she loves

Samantha had been stabbed in the face as she was trying to protect her “dad”, a homeless man in Phoenix, Arizona, who died after being attacked by thugs.

Samantha, a pit bull mix, was rescued and taken to the Circle L Ranch Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, a no-kill shelter in Prescott Valley – about an hour north of Phoenix. They looked after her and patched up her wounds. Samantha was withdrawn and obviously depressed at first, but then started coming out of herself and being friendly.

“Her previous owner must have raised her with so much love for her to overcome what happened and still be so loving to people,” Jo Farley, the volunteer coordinator at the rescue ranch, told the Prescott Daily Courier. Soon Samantha was ready to be put for adoption.

Mike Stephens and Janet Cook were looking for a dog to adopt when Mike came across Samantha’s photo on petfinder.com.

“I saw this face, read her story and thought, ‘What this dog went through, and she still loves people,'” Mike said.
In early December, the couple went out to the shelter to meet Samantha. There was no doubt that she was the dog for them. The adoption process included a home visit, and after that they were cleared to bring their new pooch home.

“Samantha’s only been with us a couple weeks, and I can’t imagine life without her,” Mike said as Samantha, who still has visible scars from the attack, gave her new mom kisses. “She’s such a love machine.”

Janet said when they were researching dogs, she noticed that many of the dogs available are pit bulls. “She’s been so good to us and it’s so good to rescue,” she said.
